When Einstein heard that the Nazis had invaded Czeclovakia, his amazing mind told him that something was up. Czeclovakia had uranium deposits, and Albert figured that the Nazis were working on an atomic bomb. He wrote President Roosevelt, saying he had an idea. Roosevelt started the Manhattan project to start developing a bomb. To do so, they had to read a paper Albert had written on the photoelectric eye- in 1905!

Many of Einsteins’ pacifist friends felt he’d betrayed them, but Einstein was convinced that only force could stop the Nazis.

In the meantime, the Manhattan Project was progressing nicely. Scientists had found that a chain reaction was possible.  Although he had started the project, Einstein knew only a little bit abut it.  Intelligence didn’t trust a pacifist and a former German.

When Albert heard on the radio that the bomb had been dropped, he only cried, "Oh yey!" He immediately started a campaign to make sure that a tragedy like that would never happen again.
